Gulls in Sanderling, NC

Gulls in Sanderling, NC

Two days after I returned from the Keys, my wife and I joined our friends Jacky and Bryan for Thanksgiving in Sanderling, near Duck, in the Outer Banks. Not ever having been to the area before, but knowing we had a house right on the beach, I  brought along my ultra light and light-tackle rods hoping to try out some shore fishing.

Unfortunately, even with mullet for bait, my equipment was no match for the riptides. To even approach fishing the Outer Banks from shore I would recommend a heavy 10 ft. surf rod with a large Penn spinning reel and 20 lb. test line.  I did manage to snag a large fan belt and tangle up most of my line! I’ll be better prepared next time!

I made another discovery while in OBX: when driving through Corolla, NC, I saw the Weeping Radish brewery. Karen, A former neighbor of ours used to make annual trips to the the Outer Banks just to pick up some of their unfiltered, unpasteurized beer. I don’t remember if I ever drank any back then, but this time we tried the Christmas Bock, Corolla Gold, Kolsch, and Fest. All are fantastic. Here’s the website. http://www.weepingradish.com/

More on my Marquesas Keys trip in a few days….
